Believe it or not, the season of fall is officially upon us. Wednesday, September 23rd marks the first official day of fall. But with the explosion of pumpkin-flavored goods and Halloween decorations already lining the shelves, one may have thought autumn started back on September 1st. With the sun setting earlier and the coming changes of the leaves brings the many coveted fall festivities: apple picking, pumpkin picking and all the food that comes with it.
Lucky for New Yorkers, there is an abundance of land in the Hudson Valley and upstate New York region that offers many farms and orchards. Acres of plush fields along the Hudson River and the tree-filled mountains of the Catskills and Adirondacks give way for beautiful foliage and scenery during the season of fall. Whether picking apples off trees is a sport for you or not, one can’t deny the beautiful landscape in New York City’s backyard. Just a short drive north, between 40 minutes to an hour outside of the city, New Yorkers can get a taste of upstate and participate in all sorts of seasonal activities.
Although temperatures might still be fairly high, harvest season is currently in full swing. Most people won’t head to an orchard until nearly October, when they can grab some apples and a pumpkin all in one visit. But October is truly for picking the best pumpkins, and September for the ripest apples. So now is the time to throw on a flannel shirt and head upstate for some fresh-picked apples, homemade cider and mouthwatering donuts.
There are tons of fun activities for all ages at most of the orchards and farms in the Hudson Valley region. Whether you have children to take on hayrides and let loose through corn mazes, significant others to share bites of an apple or a group of friends to clink glasses with, there is something for everyone. Feed your appetite, indulge your sweet tooth, admire the colors and aesthetics of the season, and relish in the past time of apple picking in autumn. These are just three awesome and popular orchards in upstate New York that beg for fall activities and apple picking.
