Taste on Melrose, already a top spot among West LA’s dining scene, has further expanded its global menu by adding smørrebrød to its lunch and brunch selection. Executive Chef Brian Sheard pays homage to Taste owners’ Danish roots, and does so in an artful way that takes patrons’ palates straight to Copenhagen.

For those unfamiliar, smørrebrød is a type of open-faced sandwich that consists of cold cuts atop buttered rye bread—a huge favorite of the Scandinavian community. It sounds basic, but Taste on Melrose takes the idea to new heights. Shrimp salad on brioche with avocado and roast beef on hazelnut rye with crispy onions and remoulade each meld diverse flavors and textures together in harmonious fashion.
This creativity and ingredient selection carries over to the rest of the menu. Weekend brunch, for example, features the ‘hole in one,’ a delightful take on the classic dish with heavenly truffle cream sauce atop fresh eggs, asparagus, mushrooms and a toasted brioche like you wouldn’t believe. Fresh pastries join the must-try list, such as house-made donuts with a buttery, almost doughy center that you simply won’t find in a pink box.
Smørrebrød and other items alike all call for something off Taste on Melrose’s drink menu. Brunch-time bloody Marys, mimosas and bellinis are all winners while the ginger mule is simply spectacular.
It’s also worth noting that Taste on Melrose offers a $21 two-course brunch prixe fixe menu that includes a mimosa or bloody Mary, making the whole outing that much better.
