Have you ever felt that the exam anxiety has hindered your performance in your exams?
Exam anxiety is basically a state of nervousness that are caused by hard situations or circumstances and suffering before exam that often lower performance. Anxiety is actually a natural part of our life. During exams students feel pressurized to perform excellent, because they are worried whether they will be able to perform well or not. Senior secondary level is the landmark in the college life of any student. Students are teenagers and face many changes physically as well as mentally and also they have to take some crucial decisions for their future career selection. Parents also pressurize them to obtain high marks so that they may get admission in prestigious and reputed institutes.
Here are some few symptoms of exam anxiety:
Basically when students suffers from physical anxiety, they become physically ill, that includes sweating, shaking, rapid heartbeat, dry mouth and nausea.
In some cases, exam anxiety become so harsh that student will drop out from the school because, many students attempts self treatment by taking drug and alcohol.
Exam anxiety can include depression, low self-esteem, anger and a feeling of hopelessness.
STRATEGIES TO REDUCE EXAM ANXIETY:
Multiple studies have proved that physical exercise is extremely effective remedy for stress or anxiety. Like, breathing exercise prompts you to focus on your body rather than your worries. Many students carry their stress in their bodies , so exercise increase blood flow of your body .when you return to studying, your focus will be much improved for sure.
Higher education is a very difficult time and success requires a lot of energy. Anxiety is reduced when you are taking care of your basic needs and give yourself a first priority.
Engage in Positive self talk:
Our thoughts influence how we feel about different situations. It’s really a different situation which causes us to feel anxious; it’s a negative tastelessness of that situation which cause us to feel anxiety.
We have two students who are going to prepare for exams.
1st student is thinking positively and telling himself that, yes I can do it I studied the best that I can and I have those skills to do my best in exams.
2nd student who thinks negatively telling himself that I am failure and there is no chance of passing exams.
Once the exam paper on their desk, the student who thinks positively who experience less anxiety rather than negative student.
Visualization is the great technique because it can use anywhere/anytime. Imagine yourself in a safe, comfortable and relaxing place.
Think about any place which you loved to visit like beach, your bed room and any park, then try to recreate that “place” in your mind by visualizing its sounds, smells and the feeling you had in your mind. You can use this technique whenever you are studying or even in exam situation. This is a great technique to facilitate relaxation and then you feel good to focus on your study.
Last thing you need before exams, organize yourself to feel relax in exam.
Try to make a check list for yourself whatever your will need in exam so than you cannot get confused in last minute.
Positive Anxiety at certain levels can be helpful and we never going to eliminate anxiety completely from our lives. We have to learn importance of the study and its role and reducing exam anxiety. After follow these steps if we do feel anxious in exam so I suggest that put your head down on a desk and take a break for about 5 to 10 minutes than practice your abdominal breathing and start thinking positive.
