If you are tired of looking at that dull, boring living room, you need to change some things up. Equip yourself with ideas and patience, and get ready to do some remodeling. It might be a good idea to do it after some house cleaning, so do that first. Or, if you don’t have the patience for that as well, hire a cleaning agency. The cleaners will do a swift job and then leave you to your reorganizing.
Choose your style
You should probably start with repainting, so that you can have a clean slate for your new style ideas. But you can’t start doing anything, unless you know what you want. If you have a particular theme or style in mind, go for it. If you are pondering ideas, consider some things. If you want to make the living room guest-friendly, go with neutral styles that won’t make anybody feel uncomfortable – Gothic armchairs are not for everybody. If you want the theme to reflect your own personality, think about what kind of person you are – lively and energetic people go with vibrant colors, more secluded households like the darker shades. If you are in a mood to make your guests think, use colors that only imply your personality in a vague and tricky way. Same goes for the style you will want to go with if you start changing furniture – old age, Gothic, and medieval styles require darker in slightly warped items, new age styles all call for light to reflect their uncanny shapes, and eastern styles call for lots of room, with only the essentials remaining. The latter could even relieve you of that tedious carpet cleaning.
Wall decorations are the most obvious choice if you have enough free space. Pick some paintings from a shop, a gallery, or even paint them yourself, if you are the artsy and creative type, and hang them around the walls. Don’t overdo it! A few paintings is plenty, you don’t need a wallpaper of art styles – after all, you have to show off with your choice of colors, or the perfect cleaning service the cleaners provided.
Now add some counter and end table decorations. Plants are always a good idea – they look good, and freshen up your home. If you don’t want to maintain anything, use fake plants. If you had some quirky gifts from friends, or adventurous purchases from foreign vendors, now is the time to apply them.
While not strictly decor, mirrors are a nice touch for a living room. Guests might feel the need to check themselves. Even if you don’t play the vanity card, mirrors are still helpful as they make the living room look much bigger than it is.
Add cushions and pillows
After the sofa cleaning, the upholstery might look a bit bland, but a few colorful cushions can easily change that.
Stick to these simple guidelines and nobody will ever blame you for having a dull living room.
